Points all round at eventful Oulton round

Wilson Racing had a successful start to the 2021 British Talent Cup championship with a fourth place in race one and all three riders scoring points at Oulton Park last weekend. We have had to wait since mid-October 2020 for the new British Talent Cup season to begin but it proved very eventful for the Barnsley based team. This season the three riders competing in the standard Moto3 category of the British Superbike Championship series are James Cook, Ryan Hitchcock and rookie Luca Hopkins. Free practice The event got underway on Friday when around thirty riders competed in two free practice sessions in mixed conditions. In FP1 the riders faced a damp by drying track. James Cook showed his pre-season form when he set the third fastest time. Ryan Hitchcock was just a tenth outside the top ten in 13th position whilst Luca Hopkins spent the time learning the circuit for the first time finishing 24th. There were two superb podiums for Barnsley based Wilson Racing’s Scott Ogden moved him to fourth in the championship. The team was competing in the penultimate round of the British Motostar Moto3 championship at Oulton Park. Also riding for Wilson Racing were Charlie Atkins who came away with two top ten finishes, whilst Jack Hart and Jake Clark were also in the points. 13-year-old rookie Osian Jones suffered a fall in race one but came back finish 21st in race two. Qualifying After two wet free practice sessions, qualifying was dry although damp at the beginning of the session.  Ogden put in three superb laps at the end of the session the final one a 1:50.838 to finish second in the standard class just 0.243 off pole position. Charlie Atkins clocked a 1:53.060 which put him 9th on the grid. Hart was uncomfortable in the tricky conditions but gained confidence which each lap. He qualified fourteenth. Barnsley based Moto3 racing team Wilson Racing completed another fantastic racing weekend, this time at Oulton Park. 14-year old Scott Ogden managed to finish second in race two moving him up to third overall in the championship. Charlie Atkins scored a fourth place, Jack Hart raced to a seventh and Jake Clark secured two top ten finishes in a really positive weekend. Competing in the Hel Performance British Motostar standard class Championship all the riders compete on NSF250R Honda Moto3 machinery. Free practice The weekend started with good weather which just improved as it went on. In the first free practice session on Saturday Scott Ogden was the third quickest standard class rider. Charlie Atkins was running in a refreshed engine so was not pushing too hard and all the team riders were within the first dozen. In the second session the track had got warmer and times improved. Wilson Racing will be making their way to Oulton Park in Cheshire, for round two of the Hel Performance British Motostar Championship series, this weekend. After round one, wildcard entry and 2017 standard class Champion, Max Cook stood on the podium twice collecting 40 points. Scott Ogden came home sixth in his best race of the weekend and Charlie Atkins, Jack Hart and Jake Clark all scored points. This weekend Max will be on Red Bull Rookies duty and Osian Jones won’t be old enough to ride before the Knockhill round. That leaves four to fly the Wilson Racing flag this weekend. There are two rounds each season at Oulton Park. In 2017 there were a total of three races in which Charlie Atkins scored two sixth places and a ninth. Barnsley’s Wilson Racing Moto3 team secured the 2017 Hel Performance Motostar British standard class Championship when Max Cook won the second race at Oulton Park last weekend. Gary Wilson said “It’s just reward for the effort the team and Max have put in this season. He has applied himself well all year and thoroughly deserves the championship title. All of us at Wilson Racing are very proud of him as we are of all our riders.” Free Practice The weekend started on Friday with a wet free practice session FP1 was very much a non-event. Max Cook made it five wins from five races. Charlie Atkins secured sixth and his best result of the season. Tom Alexander picked up four more championship points continuing his record of scoring in every round. Barnsley’s Moto3 team Wilson Racing completed a successful round at Oulton Park in the Hel Performance Motostar British standard class Championship. The 2.8 mile circuit in Cheshire is a firm favourite on the British Superbike calendar. On the Saturday the riders enjoyed two free practice session in good conditions. In the first of them Max Cook was the only rider to break the 1:50 minute barrier. His 1:49.929 placed him at the top of the timesheet. In the second free practice a broken foot peg hampered Cook’s chances of further improvement.
