2017 Motostar standard class Champions

Wilson Racing sealed the Hel Performance British Motostar Standard Class Championship title with rider Max Cook in 2017. It was an unbelievable season which saw Cook score an incredible 517 points. On his way to that tally, he registered twenty-two podiums and fifteen race victories. His nearest rival was a staggering 148 points behind in the standings. The season couldn’t have started better for Wilson Racing. Cook scored a victory in both the races in the opening round at Donington Park and went on to win seven consecutive races. He wrapped the championship up in the second race at Oulton Park meaning he did it with four more races still to go. Wilson Racing riders Max Cook and Charlie Atkins took part in the final round of the European Talent Cup over the weekend. Under clear blue skies the young riders got to enjoy the famous Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia and compete against some of the best young riders in Europe. European Talent Cup Valencia 2017 Qualifying Thirty seven riders took to the track during the first of two forty minute qualifying sessions. In the first of those Max Cook managed to record a lap time of 1:44.077 putting him fourteenth overall and 1.2 seconds behind the leading rider. Charlie Atkins was less fortunate as early in the session another rider went down the inside of the number 56 where there wasn’t a lot of room. With the Championship title wrapped up by Max Cook at the last round the three riders for Barnsley’s British Moto3 team made their way to the famous Dutch TT circuit at Assen. Max Cook secured two more podiums with a second place in each race. Whilst Charlie Atkins struggled in the deluge that was race 1 he excelled in the dry, fighting his way back and only just missing the podium. Jake Clark was unable to take part in race one after a big crash in qualifying but came back with an eighth place finish in race two. The Barnsley Moto3 racing team of Gary Wilson completed a rewarding weekend at Silverstone in the Hel Performance Motostar British Championship. Max Cook took a second and a first, Charlie Atkins had a fifth and a seventh, whilst Jake Clark had two top ten finishes. This round saw riders from the North European standard class Moto3 championship invited to compete. Although racing at the same time they were scoring points in their own championship. Free Practice The rain affected both free practice sessions on Friday. It fell continually in the morning session. This year the Motostar riders have only had one wet session this year so conditions were difficult. In the afternoon the conditions had improved with the Wilson Racing riders facing a drying track. Gary Wilson and his Moto3 team from Barnsley had another successful weekend at Cadwell Park, in round eight of the Hel Performance Motostar British standard class Championship. Max Cook took a victory and a second place, Charlie Atkins a fourth and fifth place and rookie Jake Clark an 11th and 13th place finish. Free Practice The British Moto3 series started on the Friday with two free practice sessions. Cook was struggling for feeling with his bike and ended the day third quickest almost 1.5 seconds behind the fastest standard class rider. Charlie Atkins had been unwell overnight and in the morning. He was confined to his bed between the two sessions. Despite that he managed to clock the seventh best time. Jake Clark took seven tenths off his lap time to end the day 12th. The Moto3 Wilson Racing Team from Barnsley were at Thruxton in the seventh round of the Hel Performance Motostar British standard class Championship. The support series to the British Superbike Championship started on Friday with two free practice sessions. FP1 turned out to be very eventful for Max Cook. Whilst the championship leader finished second overall he had a high-side on his tenth lap. This led to another rider crashing into his bike. Both riders were OK but Cook’s bike suffered major damage. The team worked flat out, replacing the chassis, fuel tank and fuel pump to get him back on track for FP2 where he finished fourth overall with a 1:24.307. Charlie Atkins set a good pace in FP1 and reduced his lap time by 1.6 seconds to 1:24.706. Jake Clark was experiencing the sweeping curves of Thruxton for the first time. Last weekend Barnsley’s Wilson Racing were at Brands hatch in the sixth round of the Hel Performance Motostar British Standard class championship. The three-rider team had two free practice sessions on the Friday. Max Cook finished second quickest in the morning session before ending the day at the top of the standard class timesheet. Charlie Atkins has historically struggled at this track but was sixth quickest at the end of the first day. Jake Clark had never ridden the Brands hatch GP circuit before and managed to reduce his lap time by 1.5 seconds over the two free practice sessions. The Moto3 riders were up early on Saturday morning with qualifying starting at 9am. There had been heavy overnight rain so the track was still damp. Barnsley’s Wilson Racing Moto3 team enjoyed another successful weekend at Snetterton competing in the fifth round of the Hel Performance Motostar British Standard Class Championship. Race One Motostar Snetterton 2017 Max Cook was looking to continue his fantastic winning streak in race one after setting the fastest lap time in qualifying. However, he was thwarted when another rider T-boned him in the first corner. Somehow he stayed on the bike but he ran on to the grass. He also found he was stuck in third gear. At the end of the first lap he pulled into the pits where the team quickly bent the quickshifter back into position. He’d lost over a minute on the leading riders but battled back for tenth place and six points. 14-year-old Charlie Atkins had qualified fifth and was looking to continue his good form from the last round that saw him score 24 points from the two races. A cool wind met the riders of the Hel Performance Motostar British Championship at Knockhill on Friday. The 1.3 mile circuit with its famous left-hand blind corner known as Duffus Dip was hosting round four of the Moto3 championship. Max Cook went into the weekend having won all five of the championship races this year. However, this track proved less straightforward for the 14-year-old. At the end of the twenty minute session he was third quickest in the standard class. After a six week gap between races team-mate Charlie Atkins struggled to find his rhythm early on and finished in seventh place. In the afternoon there was light rain at the circuit in Fife. The second free practice session saw most riders opting for safety, and clearly lap times didn’t improve.
