Race report Moto GP 2025.
Wet n’ Wild weekend had by Wilson Racing at Silverstone supporting Moto GP!
Last weekend saw the Wilson Racing team head down to Silverstone to compete alongside the British Moto GP round. With mixed weather conditions throughout the weekend lots of thrills and a few spills were had over the course of the 3-day event! Overall, it was another positive weekend for the riders with valuable experience gained and lots learnt from their time as part of the Moto GP circus.
After unloading and setting up on Thursday it was then only 1 more sleep until the riders got a chance to head out onto the iconic Silverstone circuit at 13:00 on Friday. With Ben and Sam having rode here last season it was a completely new experience for Jensen, Lewis and Lilly as they rumbled down pit lane for the first time and headed out for their first experience of the world-renowned track. The session started off well with all riders getting a good pace going straight out of the bag. Unfortunately, however Lewis’s session would come to a premature end as he suffered a technical and crashed out of the first session of the weekend. With the weather not looking to good for the rest of the weekend the riders continued to progress and learn the track in the dry, meaning that when the chequered flag came out Ben finished in 9th, Sam in 12th, Lewies’s time placed him in 15th, Jensen finished 19th and Lilly crossed over in 20th.
With only a few hours to rest until it was time to head back out again at 17:25, the riders prepared for FP2 by having something to eat and a rest before it was time to ride again. With all riders ready to go and bikes prepared, the walk down to pit lane happened with riders getting set up when down there for their second dry session of the day. Finally, it was time to go and with that the riders headed off out of pit lane. The session started off great again with the riders getting more much needed track time under their belts. However, on lap 3 of the session Jensen was chasing down another rider when going into the corner he went to many gears down the gearbox and locked up the rear sending him off into the gravel and out of FP2. As the final laps approached the other riders were looking stronger than that morning and the flag came out once gain Ben crossed the line in 11thm in 16th, Lewis 18th, Jensen 22nd and Lilly 24th. All of the riders knew what they had to do now on Saturday morning however with the weather looking like rain it would create a challenge as the circuit gets very slippery when wet due to the Formula 1 cars polishing it.
9am Saturday morning and it was once again go time for our riders. The weather hadn’t held off overnight and although not actively raining during the session it was full wets ahead of our qualifying. Lights out on pitlane and the riders set off a little more cautious than Friday but still with the goal of setting the best possible times! 7 laps into the session and trouble struck Lewis again when he high sided out of a turn, right in front of his teammate Ben. He had a very nasty crash with hi landing on the floor and his 90kg machine landing on top of him as it fell back down to earth. This left him with a very nasty abrasion across his neck, his leathers and helmet being wrote off and him in shock. He was very lucky to walk away without any major injuries however he was in shock from it all. The session drew to a close and the timing placed our riders in 13th for Ben, 15th for Lewis, 16th for Sam and Jensen in 20th. Unfortunately, the qualifying time to beat was 2:45.595 and Lilly fell just short of this crossing the line with a best time of 2:47.866 meaning she sadly didn’t make the qualifying time cut off leading to her not being able to race, however she will go again at Snetterton in a few weeks’ time! Back at the awning after the session and it was clear that Lewis needed to be taken to the medical centre, something which wasn’t done by the responding marshals and officials as it should have been. He was treated down at the medical centre and had his wounds on the back of his neck fully debrided as well as a full check-up. Despite the shock he was declared fit to ride and he would be back out on track at 17:10 later that day to race.
After some time to prep the bikes and recover it was finally time for our riders to head out for their first race of the weekend and line up on the Moto GP grid. As the riders lined up on the grid it was to be a dry race with everything pointing to no rain whilst they were to race. Finally, at 17:10 it was lights out and away they went barrelling down to turn 1 to start their 10 lap race. The race was going well for all of the riders with positions gained and battles being had on the track. Ben was jostling for a position in the leading group however as the race progressed he slowly lost the front pack and would end up finishing the race on his own stuck between groups. Slightly further back and with full determination to score points, Lewis was battling hard until the last lap where more bad luck fell upon him when he was taken out of the race by George Bowes with only a few turns left to go. Finally, the flag came out and Ben finished the race in 11th, Sam in 17th and Jensen in 18th. It wasn’t the end to the race that the riders or the team would have liked as the riders all felt they had more to give. But we would go again Sunday morning!
With a little rain overnight Saturday, it seemed as though it may be a 50/50 chance of a wet race on Sunday morning. However, only 2 minutes before leaving the awning to go down to pit lane the heavens opened and a torrent of rain poured from the sky. This would subside slightly but inevitably would commence again as the riders pulled off down pitlane to complete their sighting laps. The race was declared a wet race and all riders headed out with their wets on to line up on the grid. As the riders waited for lights out the rain kept coming, all be it a bit lighter now but this wouldn’t change the outcome of the race as it was a fully wet track. Lights out and the riders thundered off into turn 1, it was flat out to gain the best possible positions in the opening laps of the race. Unfortunately, as we said previously the Silverstone circuit becomes like a skating rink in places in the wet due to the Formula 1 cars and the last turn would prove to be one of these places with multiple riders crashing out here during the race and this turn sadly also claimed Samuel Munson who followed Scott McPhee into the gravel. Luckily Sam walked away unscathed but the same can’t be said for his bike, with the super large outside curbs in play Samuels bike clipped them on its side leading to his bike being completely written off in the crash. As the raced progressed the rest of the teams’ riders continued to race on and subsequently finished up the race with Ben in 8th, Jensen 10th, and Lewis 12th.
Overall, it was a mixed weekend with mixed weather conditions leading to results the riders know they can improve from. We would like to wish a speedy recovery to Lewis and would like to once again extend a huge thank you to our team sponsors who without, our racing would be made a lot more difficult.
